VHS to DVD Digital Transfers – 3 Critical Steps To Prepare
Everyone seems to becoming aware that their collection of Super 8 movies and VHS home videos are deteriorating very quickly. Environmental conditions like heat, cold, and moisture are all eating away at our home movies. So how will we preserve them?
Whether you prefer to do-it-yourself or hire a video transfer house, you will need to transfer all the older analog media to a digital format – - either DVD or digital files that you can edit on your PC or Mac. I suggest a little preparation.
The first step you might want to take is to find a place to safely keep all the film and tape. This place will need to be cool and dry. Always store tapes vertically – to minimize sag on the tape from gravity. And always remember to keep magnetic tape away from devices that produce magnetic fields. Examples would be computers, audio speakers, etc. Once in a while, you might want to fast-forward and then rewind all of your videos. All of this will help slow down the deterioration process until you are more prepared to transfer these gems to digital.
The second step is to separate your lower priority items from your high priority items. Any labels or notes you have on the film containers or tape cassettes will help you to obtain this information. But if that does not work, then just view the beginning of each reel of film under a light. You can check the magnetic tapes by popping them into a player to see what you have. Make a list that includes each film reel and tape.
Finally, take all of your notes and create a list of priority items. Which films and tapes do you feel are the most valuable ones for you? Without a plan, you might spend way too much time and money converting the less important items from your home movie collection. Be realistic and know that you may not be able to pay for transferring every piece of film and tape so you will want to be sure to weigh all your choices. Often people forget that you don’t really need to show every single clip of every movie and video. Your audience will get bored if your movies are too long.
